Farewell from the 2019 Section Chair

The new year is often a time of reflection and 2019 was very productive for our section! Our Executive Committee has been working hard on a few initiatives designed to give back to our members. First, we have grown the TSHS webinar series and now strive to hold a free webinar each winter, spring and fall to supplement our tremendous summer JSM speaker line-up. Our next webinar will be Dr. Tom Braun (University of Michigan) on Thursday January 30, 2020 @ 2pm EST. The title is “Biostatistics for Public Health Students: What Benefits Does a “Flipped” Classroom Have?” Keep an eye out for upcoming announcements with registration links. Contact the executive committee if you have a topic you would like to hear about or if you are interested in leading a webinar session.

Second, we revived our ASA Fellows committee and successfully sponsored the ASA Fellow nomination of Dr. Peter Imrey (Cleveland Clinic). This cycle we have put together two nomination teams and hope to continue to grow this endeavor. Be sure to contact the executive committee if you have a name or are willing to help with a nomination packet.

Third, we continue to grow the TSHS Resources Portal, and if you haven’t checked it in a while, then please take some time to explore the resource and all of the great datasets. If you complete a project, consider submitting your dataset to this peer reviewed archive. It looks good on the CV and benefits the entire statistical education community.

Fourth, we continue to recognize outstanding members of our section with awards. We are currently accepting nominations for the Young Investigator and Outstanding Teaching awards. Materials are due May 15, 2020 and more information can be found here.

Finally, many thanks to those on our TSHS Executive Committee team!

• Jeff Szychowski (Past Chair) and Laila Poisson (Chair-Elect)

• Maria Ciarleglio (Program Chair) and Jaya Satagopan (Program Chair-Elect)

• Ann Brearley (Publicity Officer)

• Bob Oster (Secretary/Treasurer)

• Ed Gracely (Webmaster) and John Doucette (Blog Editor)

• Jose-Miguel Yamal (Council on Sections Representative)

• Carol Bigelow (TSHS Portal Representative)

If you’re interested in getting more involved in the section, please talk to one of us for more information. If you have suggestions for how to increase TSHS membership, we would love to hear them. You can reach us at this address.

I thank you for the opportunity to serve as your TSHS section chair in 2019. Our members are world-class and so very generous with their time. TSHS is an amazing community of educators from whom I learn, grow and cherish your friendships. We now transition to the very strong leadership of Laila Poisson and I look forward to serving as past-chair and seeing what 2020 brings!
